A Gathering of Academic centers on Philanthropy in Europe (AGAPE)

The first gathering of leaders of academic centers on philanthropy in Europe took place at ESSEC Business School on November 2-3. Organized by hosting organization ESSEC and ERNOP, 30 leaders engaged in lively discussions about the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats for establishing and continuing the work of their centers. The second day provided an opportunity to engage with leaders from the European philanthropy sector.

The gathering proved to be an excellent concept of getting to know the ERNOP members from a different perspective. While the biennial ERNOP conference is the main platform to share the latest developments in research, this gathering enabled the participants to get a clear understanding of the focus of the centers. By presenting ‘showcases’ all centers shared their focus areas in terms of research, education (graduate, post graduate and executive) and recent international publications. During the breakout sessions, participants shared their experiences in increasing visibility for their work, teaching philanthropy classes, publishing research in academic journals and working together with other stakeholders.

One of the outcomes of the gathering will be that ERNOP will start collecting syllabi and course materials among its members, aimed to circulate within the network. By this ERNOP members can learn from cases that are being used in class from their European colleagues, and develop ideas about organizing new classes in philanthropy. Follow-ups from the gathering are, among other steps, a mapping of the research centers on philanthropy by academic discipline, which will enable better understanding of the positioning of the academic centers, and targeting leaders within academic journals to compose special issues on philanthropy.

A next Gathering of Academic centers on Philanthropy in Europe (AGAPE) will take place in early November 2018 and will again be kindly hosted by ESSEC Business School. For more information please contact
