Keynote by Liv Egholm (Copenhagen Business School)
Under the theme, “Philanthropy for the People, by the People? The Roles, Organisations and Motivations of Philanthropy in Contemporary Democracies and Social Structures,” the keynote will explore the intricate relationships between philanthropy, welfare-state regimes, and governance structures, with a particular focus on its role in addressing societal challenges and transformations.
By examining the evolving roles of philanthropy—both as a complement to and as a challenge for public institutions and the welfare state—the session will highlight its potential to foster social cohesion and transformation. At the same time, it will critically assess the risks of unintended consequences that may exacerbate inequalities. The keynote will integrate theoretical perspectives with practical examples, ensuring relevance for both academic scholars and professionals in the philanthropic and civil society sectors.
With its emphasis on bridging research and practice, the keynote will engage a diverse audience of conference participants from across Europe and beyond. This session will serve as an opportunity to reflect on the future of philanthropy’s contribution to democratic societies and its evolving role in addressing societal challenges.
About Liv Egholm
Liv Egholm is an expert in examining how societies conceptualize, administer, and enact “the common good” and how this notion shapes civil action and organization over time. Her research delves into foundations, philanthropy, gift-giving practices, and civil society organizations, providing key insights into the mechanisms of social inclusion and exclusion that shape these processes. Her work is instrumental in understanding the historical, contemporary, and future dynamics of societal organization and action.
Currently, Liv is leading two major research projects:
-
Civic Governance and Leading of Alliances – This project investigates collaborative practices within emerging cross-sectoral alliances, analyzing their impact on internal cooperation and their ability to address societal challenges effectively.
-
The Role of Civil Society Organizations and Social Movements – This project examines how civil society organizations and social movements engage with specific issues and societal problems, emphasizing their influence on collective action and problem resolution.
Liv’s research significantly contributes to both academic discourse and practical applications in civil society, philanthropy, and the broader concept of “the common good.” Her theoretical and methodological approach is rooted in a relational-processual perspective, drawing inspiration from cultural sociology, pragmatism, and historical analysis. Through this lens, she offers a nuanced understanding of the complexities surrounding civil action and societal governance.
Keynote by Daniela Schwarzer (Bertelsmann Foundation)
Under the theme, “Sie haben die Wahl?! Philanthropy’s Role in Democracy and Social Cohesion from a Local, National, and European Perspective,” this keynote will examine the role of philanthropy in democracy and social cohesion in light of Germany’s unexpected and historical federal elections in February 2025. This session critically assesses how philanthropy can be a force for positive change in democratic engagement at local, national, and European levels. The discussion begins with an introduction by Daniela Schwarzer, offering a foundation for exploring philanthropy’s role in these processes.
Through critical reflections based on local initiatives, national strategies, and cross-European initiatives, the session presents examples of how philanthropy has succeeded in—or hampered—bridging societal divides and promoting democratic values. The conversation will then challenge the audience to reflect on whether philanthropic organizations might perpetuate existing inequalities or wield disproportionate influence in democratic processes.
