ERNOP Online Series 2024-2025

From Systems Change Ideas to Practical Solutions – How to bridge the gap for Philanthropy

October 8, 2024, 10-11 (CET)

Speaker: Arthur Gautier (ESSEC Business School)

Discussant: Hanna Stähle (Philea)

About this seminar:

This ERNOP Science and Society webinar will explore the role of philanthropy in driving systems change. Designed for philanthropy professionals, it will provide insights into how foundations view systems change, review the types of funding practices that this approach entails, highlight the obstacles they face, and explore strategies to address these challenges.

Systems change seeks to address the root causes of large-scale social problems by analyzing the systemic nature of problematic outcomes and transforming the conditions that perpetuate them, rather than just tackling the symptoms. Despite growing interest in this approach within the nonprofit and philanthropic sectors, its practical application remains complex and often clashes with conventional funding practices.

Arthur Gautier of ESSEC Business School will present his findings on how foundation leaders conceptualize and implement system change. Through an analysis of foundation practices in France and comparison with leading examples from abroad, his study sheds light on the perception and adoption of system change among foundations. Participants will have the opportunity to engage with these findings and discuss strategies for bridging the gap between perceptions and actual adoption of systems change and seizing the opportunities offered by a systemic approach in their own philanthropic work.
