Much of the research on philanthropic foundations looks at their role in society, what they fund, and the impact they have. Far fewer studies look inward, at the organisations themselves and the day-to-day realities of running them. And who would know that story better than the CEOs who lived it? Through their eyes, we can trace how a foundation’s internal dynamics have changed, and understanding this history is key to shaping more effective, equitable, and transparent practices for philanthropic professionals across the field.

In this ERNOP Science and Society webinar, Dr. Michele Fugiel Gartner (University of St Andrews) will present findings from her research on the evolution of leadership roles at foundations. Drawing on her work with foundation leaders, she will address the following questions: How to navigate tension between executives and trustees in foundations? What is the current state of formalisation in today’s foundations, and how does it shape the way these organisations operate? In the process of foundations’ evolution, have they become more open to newcomers?

Moderated by Olga Tarasov, Vice President at Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors, the session is designed to bridge research and practice. Participants are invited to reflect on foundation governance and leadership development, and to discuss how these insights can help build a more transparent and effective field for philanthropic professionals.

About Michele Fugiel Gartner
Michele is a global philanthropy researcher, advisor, and educator whose work focuses on the people, practices, and evolving role of philanthropic foundations. She brings a distinctive combination of academic research and real-world advisory experience, helping individuals, couples, and family foundations think strategically about purpose, governance, and impact. Michele holds Chartered Advisor in Philanthropy® (CAP®) and Impact Philanthropy Advisor (IPA) designations and has advised donors and philanthropic organizations across North America and internationally. Her professional experience includes leadership and advisory roles with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Social Venture Partners, Trico Charitable Foundation, Philanthropic Foundations Canada, and the Centre for the Study of Philanthropy & Public Good. Michele holds a PhD in Management from the University of St Andrews (UK) and is known for translating research into practical insight for philanthropic leaders, practitioners, and the nonprofit sector.
