Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation

The Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation was established in 1956 and has its headquarters in Lisbon, Portugal.

Key topics of the Centre are arts & culture, knowledge & science, sustainability, social equity, and democratic participation.

(Research) questions guiding their work are, among others:

  • How do philanthropic investments in arts and culture affect access, participation, and individual and collective development across different social groups?
  • What role do philanthropic foundations play in supporting knowledge production and scientific research that fosters civic engagement and community-level sustainability?
  • How do philanthropic strategies and funding models contribute to long-term environmental sustainability, and under which conditions are such interventions most effective?
  • To what extent and through which mechanisms does philanthropy contribute to reducing inequalities in access to social, educational, and cultural opportunities?
  • How does philanthropic engagement influence democratic values, civic participation, and the public sphere in different societal contexts?
